Exeter, ON – The 300 craftsmen and apprentices employed by Exeter-based JMR Electric Ltd. have voted by more than 80% to accept the terms of the extension of their collective agreement. The three-year agreement negotiated by its elected negotiating group was approved by a two-thirds majority. JMR employees have been represented by Local 53 Construction Workers since April 2007. This is the third collective agreement between CLAC Local 53 and JMR Electric. Staff voted at regional meetings in Windsor, Chatham, London, Exeter and Cornwall during the week of January 27-30. JMR`s skilled craftsmen in its electrical and mechanical services have built major projects such as hospitals, schools, retirement complexes and recreation centres across Ontario. Negotiating a fair contract has proven to be a long and complex process – not unexpected for a company of 350 employees working on so many different projects in Ontario. But the end result was positive for all parties at the table. Throughout the renegotiation of the contract, representatives of several rival construction unions attempted to loot CLAC members. Despite the use of a dedicated organizing website, brochures, propaganda and on-site presence by 28 full-time organizers from three Ontario unions, JMR employees were determined to stay with CLAC and support them. The execution of the three-year contract provides for total hourly increases for travellers between $2.38 and $4.21 per hour, as the base hourly rate will increase to $34 per hour. A significant increase in employees` retirement provision is included in the contract, as well as the improvement of training funds, tool allowances and holidays.
